Clallam County Superior Court Judge Brent Basden established a $10,000 bail for a 47-year-old man from Brinnon, arrested late Sunday evening at a Sequim-area hotel.

The man, identified as Ryan M. Simmons, was taken into custody on August 30 around 7:44 p.m. in the third-floor hallway of the Holiday Inn Express on East Washington Street. Officers responded to the scene after Simmons’s partner contacted 911, reporting that he had been drinking, attempted to enter their shared room, and mentioned retrieving a firearm from his vehicle.

Court documents from the Sequim Police Department detail that Simmons appeared before Judge Basden the following day for a preliminary hearing. At that proceeding, the judge determined sufficient probable cause to support detention on multiple charges: third-degree assault against a peace officer, unlawful imprisonment, fourth-degree assault with a sexual motivation component, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Though formal indictment has not yet occurred, prosecutors anticipate filing formal charges during a scheduled court session on Wednesday.

During the Monday hearing, Simmons’s legal representation was addressed, with the public defender’s office assigned to his case, pending submission of a financial disclosure form ahead of the next hearing.

His public defender advocated for release without monetary bail, proposing that a ban on alcohol consumption would adequately mitigate risk. The court accepted this suggestion, imposing the alcohol restriction and setting bail at $10,000.

Release conditions prohibit Simmons from carrying firearms or other weapons deemed deadly, consuming alcohol, being present in establishments where alcohol is the primary product offered, and communicating directly or indirectly with the woman and her teenage daughter. His mobility is limited to in-state travel within Washington.

Judge Basden also issued a pre-arraignment no-contact directive safeguarding the woman and her daughter from further interaction with Simmons.

Simmons is slated to appear again in court at 1 p.m. on Wednesday for the next scheduled proceeding.
