A 32-year-old local male is currently detained at the Clallam County Correction Facility with a bail bond set at $50,000. He faces allegations of physically engaging with law enforcement and making lethal threats during a detention incident that occurred over the weekend.
Forks Police Department officers took the suspect into custody on the evening of June 6. On Tuesday afternoon, Clallam County Superior Court Judge Brent Basden reviewed the case during a preliminary hearing and determined there was sufficient probable cause to keep the defendant in custody. The court also confirmed the assignment of a public defender to handle the case.
During the proceedings, the county prosecutor argued that the defendant represented both a risk of fleeing and a danger to the public. The state attorney requested the $50,000 bail amount, pointing to claims that the suspect tried to stop officers from taking him to the jail after his initial arrest.
The prosecution also detailed the defendant’s prior legal record, which includes three convictions for fourth-degree assault between 2020 and 2023, with one of those offenses classified under domestic violence statutes. His history further includes a 2021 conviction for reckless driving, a 2019 conviction for driving under the influence, a 2015 physical control offense, and three warrants for failure to appear issued in 2019.
Defense counsel argued for a lower bail figure, suggesting a range between $5,000 and $10,000. Ultimately, Judge Basden upheld the $50,000 requirement. While the judge noted only "limited concerns" about the defendant showing up for future court appearances, he expressed "significant concerns" regarding the potential for the defendant to interfere with the legal process.
Examining the probable cause affidavit, the judge observed that the alleged behavior appeared to exceed standard verbal threats. The affidavit describes the suspect as threatening to kill police officers and displaying violent behavior during the arrest.
Jail booking records indicate the suspect was held on suspicion of several charges, including third-degree assault, felony harassment, driving under the influence of alcohol, third-degree malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and a hit-and-run involving an unattended vehicle.
Prosecutors plan to formally submit the charges at a hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday. The defendant’s arraignment is currently set for Friday.
